Reading Crime Beat, by Michael Connelly. His favorite book of all time--The Lathe of Heaven, by Ursula K. LeGuin, which he's read more than once. It's a sci fi story about the future and one man's ability to affect reality with his dreams.

From dictionary.com, the definition of lathe:

1.a machine for use in working wood, metal, etc., that holds the material and rotates it about a horizontal axis against a tool that shapes it.
