Reading His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman.
Something good he's read recently--The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, by Michael Chabon. He likes comics, adventure, books with historical settings and a good overall feel. Other books he's liked are Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn and Underworld, by Don DeLillo.
His own novel? He's actually writing one. It's about a booksmart, but not streetsmart kid who graduates from college and becomes a paralegal for a law firm that represents organized crime, thereby enrolling in Streetsmart 101.
