June 4, Wednesday evening -- Reading Alastair Reynolds

Reading Chasm City, by Alastair Reynolds. It's the second book in a trilogy, which he got turned on to by some blog (not mine). He's got a long BART commute and, though he started the book last night, he's already on four hundred something.

His favorite book of all time, Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert A. Heinlein. Why? It's an unorthodox story of love. He read it again a month ago and, in all, probably has read it about twelve times. When the book initially came out, in the sixties, it was released in its abridged version. It wasn't until the eighties that the complete manuscript was published. It's about a man born en route to Mars who comes back to Earth.

What he likes about much of sci fi is that explores what it is to be human and also, what author C.J. Cherreh does well, it explores themes of isolation or being not a part of a group that you are with.

When he was young he started reading Piers Anthony's Xanth series, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, and the British author, Michael Moorcock.

What does M.I.R.V. stand for? (his hat) Man Is Reading Verne? --no, wrong author.

There's some technical space thing that's abreviated MIRV, but more likely it's for the band of that name.
