March 9, Monday evening -- Reading Richard Yates

In the new light of 5pm, drinking Jamba Juice in the Financial District
Reading The Collected Stories of Richard Yates, author of Revolutionary Road. Before this, which he's just started, he was reading Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression, by Studs Terkel, a Chicago radio fellow.

Some favorites -- Blaise Cendrars, Nikos Kazantzakis, Ryokan, Henry Miller, Knut Hamsun, Jean Giono, Gary Snyder, James Caughlin, and Allen Ginsberg.

When he was a kid, it was comic books -- he doesn't remember which ones -- that got him reading.
