Reading Palestine, Peace Not Apartheid, by Jimmy Carter. It's for her political book club at Bird and Beckett, a bookstore in Glen Park. She's a member of a fiction book club there, too. Recently they read White Teeth, by Zadie Smith and Snow, by Orhan Pamuk. She's been a member for 9 years!!! ever since her son was born. If you check out her website at www.vacuumkitty.com , click on books and scroll down a little, you can see all the books they've read over these nine years. (She's changing hosts on her website, though, so if it doesn't come up, try again in a few days.)

Her favorite book--Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction, by J.D. Salinger. She has a friend in Oakland who is also a Salinger fan--they connected as a result of his books in a way that is, she searched for the word to describe it, almost spiritual. Though they live close together, they keep in touch by exchanging letters.
