Reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being, by Milan Kundera. He was inspired to read it after attending a documentary film about San Francisco filmmakers at the San Francisco International Film Festival--one of the filmmakers had done a piece on the book.

Authors he likes--Joseph Conrad, William Faulkner, Henry Miller, and Charles Bukowski, who he said influenced a lot of Tom Waits's music. Bukowski's writing is not flowery, spare, set in bars and alleyways.

Right now he's also reading Nixon and Kissinger: Partners in Power, by Robert Dallek and The Whole Equation: A History of Hollywood, by David Thomson, though he can't stand L.A.
