March 17, Tuesday afternoon -- Reading Jonathan Fineberg

In the pre-operatory room of the ambulatory surgery unit
Passing the time before my upcoming procedure --surgery is a lot like traveling -- you sit, you wait, you wake up somewhere new -- and reading my sister's art history text book, Art Since 1940, by Jonathan Fineberg, finally beginning to understand existentialism. In the photo above, the guy whose finger I am pointing to is Christo Javacheff. Christo, with his wife Jeanne-Claude, has wrapped fabric around islands, buildings, and bridges. They wrapped the oldest bridge in Paris, the Pont Neuf, to "underscore ephemerality and creative vision over the stable and anonymous monolith of social convention." Willowy, billowy fabric.

The surgery is not for removing the unicorn horn pictured below (brushing my hair took care of that), but for correcting a bunion on my left foot. I'll be on crutches for the next eight weeks and will have plenty of time to read and be read to, and to catch up on everything else that has alluded me over the past couple decades....all while under the influence of pain killers.

You'll need to post a picture of your foot, wrapped up like a Cristo package.

luckily the cast, though equally ephemeral, isn't as heavy!! -- just looked it up and found out that "454,178 square feet of woven polyamide material" was used to wrap the Point Neuf!
