Reading Snow Country, by Yasunari Kawabata, which he said was "haunted and spooky" with great character and relationship development. Something else he's read recently--In the Time of the Cannibals: The World Music of South Africa's Basotho Migrants, by the anthropologist, David Coplan.

While we were talking his girlfriend came to meet him and showed me what she was reading--Chaka, by Thomas Mofolo. It's a historical novel set in Lesotho, where they were both in the Peace Corps up until last year. One of her favorite books is Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom.

While they were in Lesotho, books were an important part of their lives--the ones that were shared most among the Peace Corps volunteers were the long ones, epic novels like War and Peace.
