December 29, 2007 -- Saturday evening

Reading Wherever You Go There You Are, Mindfulness Meditation in Daily Life, by Jon Kabat-Zinn.

His favorite book, right now, is Self-Reliance, by Ralph Waldo Emerson. It's about not allowing outside influences to change what you want to do. His mom gave him the book...an old copy about 100 years old. How did she come by it? A rare book show? An antique shop? No. Dumpster Diving! I love San Francisco.

He finds Self-Reliance consoling. It makes him realize that other people think the same things he's thinking. He's not so unique.

If he were to write a book, today, right now, it'd be a bout communication, maybe with his chiuaua terrier who is waiting in the car. For instance, his dog is more likely to respond favorably to his requests if he asks nicely, in a quiet voice. It takes just one nice, quiet request. If he yells it takes more. Dogs like to be talked to nicely.
